An Illinois couple just won $250,000 in the state lottery, but due to budget issues they have received an IOU from the state and not the cash. The state says it’s coming.
“For the first time, we were finally gonna get a break,” winner Susan Rick told the Chicago Tribune. “And now the Illinois Lottery has kind of messed everything up.”
“You know what’s funny? If we owed the state money, they’d come take it and they don’t care whether we have a roof over our head,” she added. “Our budget wouldn’t be a factor. You can’t say (to the state), ‘Can you wait until I get my budget under control?’”
According to the report, the states comptroller’s office does not have legal authority to release the funds at the moment. Everyone with prizes greater than $25,000 are getting IOUs from the state.
According to ZeroHedge.com, the state recently fired a budget consultant who was making $30,000 per month. Illinois faces a $9 billion budget deficit.
Americans spent more than $70 billion on the lottery in 2014, which includes revenue from online sales. Recently, a tribal casino stopped paying the state of Michigan a cut of its gaming revenue due to the state offering online purchases. Illinois also has an online lotto.
The state once looked at running online poker through the lottery.
