CardPlayer.com is pleased to announce that its "History of Poker" series is now available online. Click here to visit the page.

The series of articles is written by novelist, poet, and World Series of Poker competitor James McManus, who, in 2000, finished fifth in the main event (the year Chris Ferguson won it). McManus wrote a book about his WSOP experience called Positively Fifth Street: Murderers, Cheetahs, and Binion's World Series of Poker, which has found a cult-like standing among poker players.

The series, of which there are already eight parts with more to follow, chronicles the history of poker, going all the way back to the invention of cards. The roots of the modern game of poker are explored and McManus also talks about how seminal events in world history, such as the invention of the riverboat steamer and the opening of trade lines, helped change and evolve the game.

The articles are excerpts from a book McManus is working on that will be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2009.
