The Illinois Lottery has said that anyone who has won $600 or more won’t be paid until the state budget is passed, according to a report from the Associated Press.
The lotto said that its check writing account is empty and it can’t be replenished right now, the report said.
The lottery had already stopped paying those who won $25,000 or more. Prizes less than $600 are able to be claimed at retailers. There are more than 8,000 retail locations in the state that sell lottery tickets.
A class action lawsuit filed last month seeks to get more than $288 million owed to lottery winners in Illinois paid with five-percent interest. Some claim the IOUs amount to fraud.
The state elected to fire its lottery manager last month.
Illinois Lottery proceeds dropped last year for the first time since 2009. It fell by $125 million to $690 million during the fiscal year that ended on June 30. Americans spent more than $70 billion on the lottery in 2014, which makes it the most popular form of regulated gambling in the country.
