The London Luck: Are London's High Rollers Luckier Than Any Other? Why Is The Win Rate For High End London Casinos So Low? |
|
The UK Gambling Commission reports annual ‘Drop and Win’ statistics for UK land-based casinos and online casino review site, Jackpot.co.uk recently compiled this data into a report and infographic (click the infographic to the right to view) which investigated which parts of the country are the luckiest – and why.
As you’ll know, ‘Drop and Win’ measures the total deposits paid into land-based casinos in the UK (Drop), and the total amount retained by the house (Win) in any given 12-month period (so ‘win’ in this context is the house edge, not the money paid out to winning players).
In Scotland, for example, players dropped £216 million ($334m) in the 12 months to July 2015, and the casinos kept £34.5 million ($53.3m), a house win rate of 16.0%.
By way of comparison, in London, the win rate at most casinos measured 16.1%, with 21 casinos retaining £395 million ($611m) of the £2.45 billion ($3.8bn) deposited there, but at the English capital city’s six High End casinos there was a house win rate of just 5.2%. Only £131 million ($203m) was retained from total deposits of £2.52 billion ($3.91bn) in High End London casinos.
Does this mean high rollers in London are the luckiest UK players?
Well, yes and no.
According to Jackpot.co.uk’s report, there is a regional trend throughout the UK – areas further north tend to have lower Drop and Win in terms of monetary value, while further south both figures begin to rise.
This is based on average Drop and Win per casino, helping to compensate for those regions with many more casinos contributing towards the total.
In the six High End London casinos, the average drop is four times as much as other London casinos, almost £421 million ($651m) in total, and 23 times higher than casinos in the provinces.
So if the drop is so much higher, why are high end London casinos not literally raking it in?
The answer, according to Jackpot.co.uk, is the high number of low edge games (such as punto banco/baccarat and blackjack) coupled with the distinct lack of high edge games such as slots offered by High End casinos.
While the low edge games eat into the house win, each of the six casinos still averages a win of £21.8 million ($33.8m), meaning that while the players might walk away feeling lucky, the casino’s takings are much higher overall.
In addition to this, high end casino players tend to be savvier than the average and work the generous comps and credit lines extended to their big players.
Ultimately, it’s a rare example of how ‘the London luck’ can leave everyone feeling like a winner.
