Poker pros JC Alvarado and Olivier Busquet have agreed to a MMA fight in April that will have a six-figure payday for one of the gamblers.
Alvarado said on Twitter that he will be risking $150,000, while Busquet stands to potentially lose $120,000. Busquet weighs 187.5 pounds, while Avarado weighs 165.
The whole thing got started after Busquet Tweeted in late September that he was “looking for MMA training motivation” and “trying to gauge interest in a six-figure fight from anyone in the poker community.”
Poker pro and semi-professional MMA fighter Terrence Chan said on Twitter that the sum the two are fighting for is a lot for the sport. “Winner will make more money from this fight than all but a small handful of UFC champions,” Chan said.
Chan said that Alvarado is a favorite given Alvarado’s past “experience” with MMA.
“Not sure that [Olivier] has been in a fight or knows how hard the grind is, but obviously he’s a physical beast,” Chan added.
A venue for the fight hasn’t been decided yet.
The fight between Alvarado and Busequet comes not long after poker pros Doug Polk and David Sands failed to negotiate a $500,000 battle.
Other successful fights between poker pros include Gus Hansen and Theo Jorgensen boxing in 2009, with the latter taking a five-figure sum from Hansen, and Lex Veldhuis and Bertrand Grospellier kickboxing several years ago. Veldhuis won that fight against the Frenchman.
