The governor of Texas has criticized the state’s Lottery Commission over its interest in online gambling, fantasy sports and sports betting, according to a report from The Dallas Morning News.

Lottery officials from Texas recently visited Delaware to meet with that state’s lottery officials. In a letter thanking the Delaware Lottery, Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery Commission, said that they “were particularly interested to learn about [Delaware’s] sports betting, Internet wagering and casino games” and they “came away from the visit with an amazing amount of information.”

However, Gov. Greg Abbott said this week that he wants the lottery to stop.

“Please ensure this intent and direction is strictly enforced among the staff of the Texas Lottery Commission,” Abbott wrote in a letter dated Nov. 9. “Please also notify the executive director and staff that any request to travel to gather information about gaming opportunities that are prohibited in Texas should be denied.”

He added that while he “applauds” the Texas lottery’s success, he wants the lottery to continue “with extreme caution” in trying to “preserve this success.”

The Texas legislature meets once every two years and gaming expansion is briefly considered every time, but it doesn’t go anywhere.
