Police Look Into Weekly Mahjong Game At Condo Clubhouse

A weekly game of Mahjong run by a group of elderly women in Florida was targeted by police for illegal gambling, according to a report from The Huffington Post. The game had a daily “loss limit” of just $4.

The games at a condominium clubhouse just outside Orlando were then shut down by management, the report said. Also suspended were poker and bingo games at the complex.

Fortunately for the women, who are in their late 80s, the police apparently decided that the game didn’t violate any state gambling laws because the stakes are so low. It’s not a crime to host a game where the stakes are less than $10. The games are expected to resume.

Still, the situation annoyed members of the game.

Police looking into micro-stakes gambling by seniors is nothing new in some parts of the country. Last year in Washington State, authorities put a halt to a 25-year-old penny-ante pinochle game at a senior center. In July, Indiana gaming regulators issued a warning to a euchre game at a senior center that was offering prizes such as toilet paper and fruit.
