A proposed casino near Boston won a major victor in court this week after a judge dismissed one of the city’s lawsuits trying to block it.
Billionaire Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn and Boston Major Martin Walsh have been fighting over Wynn’s casino plan in Everett. Boston has complained that the state played favorites in picking Wynn as the winner in the casino bidding process and also that traffic will be a nightmare once the casino is open.
However, a Suffolk Superior judge on Thursday said that the state Gaming Commission didn’t do anything wrong in giving Wynn the coveted license, The Boston Globe reported. The traffic concerns from the city will still have to be addressed.
Wynn filed a libel lawsuit in October over the allegations of misconduct in the process that awarded it one of the few state casino licenses authorized by a 2011 bill.
Boston’s other lawsuit against the casino project aims to invalidate the environmental permit it received. Boston alleges that “Wynn’s project will generate severe damage to the environment” and that it will cause “the residents of Charlestown and the Greater Boston area to suffer environmental impacts that will materially degrade their health, well-being, and quality of life.”
Ironically, the casino is planned for a former Monsanto Chemical site, which Wynn would be spending millions to clean up in order to build the casino.
