On March 13, a new batch of bounties and bounty hunters gathered for day 1B of the 2007
Bay 101 Shooting Star main event. While the 240 second-flight participants continued to pursue the sanctioned side action ($5,000 for busting a "Shooting Star" and $10,000 for finishing with the end-of-day chip lead), tournament director Matt Savage established the ultimate goal with his announcement of the
Bay 101 Shooting Star's official payout structure.
The starting field of 449 generated a $4,490,000 total prize pool, and, with the money bubble set to pop with the 46th-place elimination, the payout for the 2007
Bay 101 Shooting Star's top five finishers was announced as follows:
First place - $1,125,000
Second place - $600,000
Third place - $314,000
Fourth place - $250,000
Fifth place - $200,000

For the day 1B players, the hunt, for both the bounties and a
WPT title, kicked off at 11:15 a.m. PDT with $25-$50 blinds and $20,000 starting stacks.
Like 1A, the tournament's one-"Shooting Star"-per-table opening policy resulted in a number of tough draws. Among the more notable, table 21 featured Haralabos Voulgaris (seat No. 1), Victor Ramdin (seat No. 4), "Shooting Star" Layne Flack (seat No. 5), Tim Phan (seat No. 6), Lee Markholt (seat No. 7), and Hans "Tuna" Lund (seat No. 8).
While the "Shooting Stars" all share the common bond of fame, the day's first two downed bounties possessed an intimately close connection. Jennifer Tilly exited play on the losing end of a flopped flush-over-flush hand against Jon Friedberg. Minutes later, Tilly found company at the rail in the form of boyfriend Phil Laak, who became the tournament's second eliminated "Star" when his overcards dropped to an opponent's flopped pair.
Another "Shooting Star," Chau Giang, saw his 2007
Bay 101 Shooting Star end courtesy of a bad beat. A series of raises and reraises on a Q
7
6
flop led to all-in moves on the K
turn. Giang appeared to be in good shape to double up when he flipped over the Q
Q
to his opponent's J
10
, but the high-stakes vet became a day 1B casualty when the A
spiked on the river.
A battle between a 2006 two-time
WPT final table finisher and a 2006 two-time
WSOP bracelet winner sparked a successful second-half run.
On a Q
8
5
flop, and with $40,000 already in the pot, Jeff Madsen moved all in for his last $18,000 against Joe Pelton. Madsen's 8
8
put him behind Pelton's K
10
, but the 2006
World Series Player of the Year doubled through the 2006
Legends of Poker champ when the 5
landed on the turn.
In post-dinner break play, Madsen crossed the $100,000 mark courtesy of a nut flush elimination hand. The 21-year-old pro continued to rake pots, and finished action in the top five chip counts.
Another big story in late play centered on the setting of a new
Bay 101 record. Gus Hansen (seat No. 1) joined fellow "Shooting Star" "Miami" John Cernuto (seat No. 3), Amir Vahedi (seat No. 5), Jen Harman (seat No.7) and Chip Reese (seat No. 9) at Table 19, and the five players represented the most bounties every placed at the same table.
Reese notched a $10,000 win when he eliminated Hansen and Harman on the same hand, but the 2006
WSOP H.O.R.S.E. champ, crippled after his set of eights collided with an opponent's set of jacks, became a busted bounty himself when his pocket tens fell to Isabelle Mercier's pocket aces.
An hour later, and after 12 hours of play, day 1B concluded.
The top five chip counts were as follows:
1. Clint Baskin - $200,100
2. Tim Foster - $176,600
3. Jeff Madsen - $174,200
4. Ted Forrest - $159,500
5. Nenad Medic - $138,300
Clint Baskin earned $10,000 for his day 1B chip leader finish.
Among the 70 survivors, notables include Erik Seidel (Shooting Star), Lee Markholt, James Van Alstyne, Tim West, Isabelle Mercier (Shooting Star), Danny Smith, Barry Greenstein (Shooting Star), Joe Pelton, Patrik Antonius (Shooting Star), Johnny Chan, and Mark Newhouse.
Additional day 1B bustouts were Erick Lindgren (Shooting Star), T.J. Cloutier (Shooting Star), Scott Fischman (Shooting Star), Mike Matusow (Shooting Star), Joe Cassidy, Todd Brunson (Shooting Star), Paul Darden (Shooting Star), John Juanda (Shooting Star), Michael Mizrachi (Shooting Star), Chip Jett (Shooting Star), and Mike Carson.
Play resumes at noon PDT when the combined fields of 1A and 1B return for day two of the 2007
Bay 101 Shooting Stars main event.
