The final European Poker Tour main event of the year is in the books. The 2015 EPT Prague €5,300 no-limit hold’em main event drew a massive 1,044-player field, creating a prize pool in excess of €5 million. In the end the lion’s share of that went to 51-year-old Hossein Ensan, who emerged victorious at his third EPT final table of the past 16 months to earn his first major title and the €754,510 ($825,660) first-place prize.
“I am having fun,” Ensan told PokerStars blog reporters after the win when asked why he has been playing so often on the EPT. “This organization, the PokerStars organization, the camera people, the fans, that makes it fun.”
This win also awarded him 1,920 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was Ensan’s second title of the year, having also won a prelim at the EPT Grand Final this spring. As a result of this latest score he has climbed into 24th place in the overall standings with 3,100 total points and year-to-date earnings of $1,104,449.
Ensan entered the final day of this event in fifth chip position among the six remaining players, but was able to survive and build his stack enough to enter heads-up play with 17.5 million of the roughly 31 million chips in play. Ensan and Gleb Tremzin made a deal before heads-up play began that saw them lock up €724,510 each, leaving €30,000 and the title left to play for.
The two battled it out for 115 hands, with multiple big swings and a few lead changes, but Ensan pulled out to a 2-to-1 lead before the final hand arose. Ensan limped in for 500,000 and Tremzin called. The flop came down Q77 and Tremzin checked. Ensan checked behind and the turn brought the 9. Tremzin bet 1 million and Ensan made the call. The river completed the board with the 4 and Tremzin bet 2.6 million, roughly half of his remaining stack. Ensan raised all-in and after some thought Tremsin made the call with the QJ, only to have Ensan show him the AA for an underrepresented overpair. With that Ensan raked in the pot and claimed the title, sending Tremzin to the rail as the runner up with €724,510.
