The final super high roller event of 2015 is now in the books. This year’s WPT Alpha8 Las Vegas drew a total of 45 entries at the Bellagio this year, building a total prize pool of $4,414,500. In the end there could be only one champion and that player was Fedor Holz. The German poker pro entered the final eight with a massive chip lead and never looked back, making quick work of the stacked final table to emerge victorious with the title and the $1,589,219 first-place prize.

Holz also earned 600 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his ninth final table and second title of the year, and with 2,601 and $3,188,728 in year-to-date earnings he has climbed into 47th place in the overall POY standings.

Holz began the third and final day of this high-stakes tournament with roughly 40 percent of the total chips in play. He eliminated David Peters in eighth place to burst the bubble and then knocked out Keith Tilston to further his massive lead. He continued to build his stack while Nick Petrangelo knocked out Ankush Mandavia (5th – $307,015) Sean Winer (4th – $441,450) and Daniel Negreanu (3rd – $640,103) en route to a final showdown for the title.

Nick PetrangeloWhen heads-up play began Holz had more than a 2-to-1 chip advantage. The two played 23 hands in total, with Holz steadily increasing his lead without showdown until the final hand arose.

With blinds of 80,000 – 160,000 with an ante of 20,000 Holz limped in from the button and Petrangelo went all in for 3.6 million. Holz called with the 5Spade Suit5Club Suit and was racing against Petrangelo’s ADiamond SuitQSpade Suit. The board ran out JClub Suit3Spade Suit2Diamond Suit4Club Suit9Spade Suit to secure the pot for Holz and send Petrangelo to the rail as the runner-up with $1,015,335 and 500 Player of the Year points.

This was Petrangelo’s eleventh final table finish of 2015. Along the way he won two titles, including his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet in the $3,000 no-limit hold’em shootout event. With 6,026 total POY points and year-to-date earnings of $3,362,396 Petrangelo sits in third place in the 2015 rankings, just 44 POY points behind current second-place occupant Joe Kuether.
