For the thirteenth year in a row the new year begins in earnest on the poker tournament at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which kicks off on Jan. 6 at the Atlantis in the Bahamas. Over the course of nine days the festival will play host to a total of 104 tournaments (including satellites), a new record for the PCA.
The first major event of the series begins Wednesday, Jan. 6. The $100,000 super high roller drew a record field of 66 entries last year, with eventual champion Steve O’Dwyer earning $1,872,580 for the win. The next player to hoist the trophy in this event is just days away from being decided.
Other big events at the series include the LAPT Bahamas $2,200 re-entry main event running Jan. 7 – 9, the $50,000 buy-in one-day high roller on Jan. 9 and the $25,000 high roller which will run from Jan. 12 – 14.
Of course the centerpiece of the whole series is the European Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event, which will run from Jan. 8 – 13 and feature a reduced buy-in of $5,300 after years at the $10,300 price point.
The 2014 running of the main event drew 816 entries, with American Kevin Schulz victorious with the title and the $1,491,580 first-place prize.
Over the past 12 years the PCA main event has consistently been one of the biggest events on the tournament circuit every year, always making a huge impact on the Card Player Player of the Year race. The winner has finished inside the top twenty in the POY standings six out of the past eight years, with prior champions including the likes of Gus Hansen (2004), Ryan Daut (2007), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (2008), Galen Hall (2011) and Dominik Panka (2014).
