Maurice Hawkins has won the 2016 World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs $1,675 no-limit hold’em main event, topping a field of 321 entries to win his sixth WSOPC gold ring and the $113,152 first-place prize.

Winning a poker tournament is an impressive feat in its own right, but this title run was made all the more impressive due to the fact that Hawkins called his shot on Twitter on April 6.

He fulfilled the first part of that prophecy when he took down the $365 buy-in event at the Horseshoe Council Bluffs the following day. Four days after that his prognostication was proven entirely correct when he came into the final day of the main event in second chip position among the final six players. Hawkins survived to heads-up play against Ryan Phan, who took roughly a 3-to-1 advantage into the final showdown. Hawkins was able to mount a comeback, overtaking the lead when his pocket nines flopped a set that improved to a boat when Phan’s pair of five became trips on the turn.

On the final hand both Hawkins and Phan flopped trips with a board of 8Spade Suit4Spade Suit4Diamond Suit. Hawkins held the 4Heart Suit3Diamond Suit while Phan had the 6Heart Suit4Club Suit. After both checked the flop the turn brought the QClub Suit and Hawkins checked to Phan, who bet 60,000. Hawkins made it 425,000 to go and Phan moved all-in. Hawkins made the call and saw that he was behind with the inferior kicked. The river changed everything when it brought the 3Heart Suit, giving Hawkins the full house to secure the pot and the title. Phan hit the rail as the runner-up, earning $69,962 for his deep run.

And with that Hawkins’ called shot came true and he became only the seventh player in history to win six WSOP Circuit gold rings.
