An unnamed source in the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development has confirmed to ESPN’s David Purdum that Mark Davis, the owner of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, is scheduled to take a meeting with tourism officials regarding a possible move for the team to Las Vegas.
Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson has proposed a $1.3 billion stadium project, which would see a public-private partnership for a domed stadium to be built near the University of Nevada Las Vegas. In January, UNLV bought a 42-acre site that the proposed stadium could be built on.
The Raiders were one of three teams that publicly lobbied for relocation this past year. The Chargers and Rams also looked to relocate, with the former ultimately staying put in San Diego for at least a year while the later has moved to Los Angeles and into a $1.8 billion stadium that is being constructed with the hopes of being ready by 2019.
The NFL is known to have a staunch anti-gambling stance, which might be a tough barrier to overcome for Davis and Adelson as they take the initial steps towards possibly moving the team to Nevada.
