Nevada is positioning itself for a future of legalized sports betting nationwide.
According to a report from Seeking Alpha, the Nevada Gaming Commission is considering whether to allow people located anywhere in America to fund a sports betting account through a Nevada-based sports betting mobile app, as long as the gambler first appears in person in the Silver State to verify their identity.
Nevada brick-and-mortar sports books have long used mobile betting as a way to boost revenue, but registration, and of course the betting itself, has always been limited to those physically within the state’s borders. A public hearing on the issue is expected for later this year.
According to Legal Sports Report, if Nevada gaming regulators allow the change, people outside of Nevada still couldn’t wager on single sports games, thanks to the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
It’s worth noting that the state of Delaware has sports betting in the form of parlays.
It’s unclear what, if any, betting could happen outside of Nevada until federal reform on sports betting takes place. The American Gaming Association said recently that whoever is the next president will have a sports betting bill on their desk.
A hearing Wednesday on Capitol Hill will address daily fantasy sports and traditional sports betting, two activities that have a lot of overlap. DFS could be a catalyst for a federal sports betting framework. A Congressman from New Jersey is pushing the issue.
