David Hubbard is a recreational poker player from Angleton, Texas. By day he works as a federal agent, but he has been playing poker in his spare time for years. He has had several close calls in events on the World Series of Poker Circuit, but this week he finally made his break through by topping a sizable field of 785 entries (up over 40 percent over last year’s turnout of 554 entries) to win the 2016 WSOP Circuit Harrah’s New Orleans $1,675 no-limit hold’em main event.

For the win Hubbard was awarded his first WSOPC gold ring and the $235,500 first-place prize. Hubbard has promised the ring to his youngest daughter.

“I promised her that ring a long time ago when I started playing poker," said Hubbard after the win. “She follows poker and likes poker. She might be the next Loni Harwood.”

Harwood, a two-time gold bracelet and two-time ring winner herself, is Hubbard’s favorite player. He might have a chance to see her more often, as he is less than a year away from retiring and plans on playing more poker as a retiree.

Hubbard overcame a tough final table on his way to the title, defeating the likes of WSOP bracelet winner David Diaz (4th – $79,776) and WSOPC ring winners Blake Barousse (9th – $22,243) and David Slaughter (5th – $60,253).

It came down to a final showdown between Hubbard and Jake Dollinger. Hubbard was able to pull out to a big lead early on, making a flush against Dollinger’s straight. The final hand was a classic race situation, with Dollinger getting all in holding ASpade SuitKHeart Suit against Hubbard’s 10Heart Suit10Diamond Suit. The board ran out QHeart Suit10Spade Suit6Club Suit10Club SuitJHeart Suit to give Hubbard quad tens, securing the pot and the title while Dollinger earned $145,186 as the runner up.
