J.C. Tran is playing poker like a man possessed. Last night, he continued his winning ways by taking down a $3,000 no-limit hold'em event at the Five-Star World Poker Classic for $272,320.

Tran is ranked the top player in the world, according to Card Player Magazine's Player of the Year chart, with 4,332 points. James Van Alstyne is second with 2,848, followed by Gavin Griffin (2,352), Marc Karam (2,080), and J.C. Alvarado (2,061).

Tran has been running well since October. Since then, he's cashed 10 times, winning four tournaments for more than $1.5 million. He also finished second at the World Poker Tour's L.A. Poker Classic $10,000 championship event, which was good for another $1.177 million.

The top five finishers of the $3,000 no-limit hold'em event at the Five-Star World Poker Classic were:

  • J.C. Tran, $272,320
  • Jonathon Little, $146,760
  • Scotty Nguyen, $73,380
  • Brian Wolfe, $40,015
  • Norman Contreras, $30,020

This was the fourth warm-up event at the Five-Star World Poker Classic. The series climaxes with the $25,000 WPT Championship, a weeklong event that starts Friday, April 21. All the events have attracted deep fields loaded with the world's best players.

For example, the final dozen of the $5,000 event that's set to conclude today include Clonie Gowen, Jason Lester, Kevin Song, David Singer, and James Van Alstyne. Play begins at 3 p.m. PT, and just as all the events at the Five-Star World Poker Classic, CardPlayer.com is there to provide live updates.

Van Alstyne goes into the last day of the $5,000 event with $100,000 in chips and needs a top three finish to keep the pressure on Tran in the Player of the Year race.
