Connor Drinan has won the festival-closing European Poker Tour Barcelona €10,300 no-limit hold’em high roller event, topping a record field of 591 entries to win the title and the first-place prize of €849,200 ($959,596 USD).
Drinan was also awarded 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his eighth final table of the year and was enough to move him into third place in the overall standings with 4,512 total points and $3,196,592 in year-to-date earnings.
Drinan came into the final day of this event in fourth chip position with 36 players remaining. He had plenty of tough competition to deal with on the final day including Mike McDonald (30th – €27,800), Ivan Luca (27th – €32,680), Joe Serock (21st – €38,410), Davidi Kitai (16th – €49,875), Anthony Zinno (13th – €67,100), Joseph Cheong (6th – €233,300) and Ari Engel (5th – €307,900.)
In the end it came down to a heads-up battle between Drinan and Mihails Morozovs. The two were pretty evenly stacked when the final hand arose. With blinds of 150,000 – 300,000 and an ante of 50,000 Morozovs limped in from the button and Drinan checked. The flop brought the 1064 and Drinan checked. Morozovs bet 700,000 and Drinan check-raised to 1.7 million.
Morozovs moved all-in for just under 14 million total and Drinan called, having him covered by just over a million chips. Drinan had flopped two pair with the 64 and was ahead of Morozovs’ J10. The the K on the turn and Q on the river kept Drinan ahead, securing him the pot and the title. Morozovs earned €616,840 as the runner up.
