NFL Raiders Moving To Las Vegas? Casino Boss Says Maybe Not

The NFL in Las Vegas? Not so fast.

Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson is willing to walk away from a plan to build a stadium in Las Vegas for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, according to a report from Reuters.

At a travel technology conference in Israel last week, Adelson said that the discussions with the team have been rough. He didn’t provide any specifics, but he hinted at the possibility that he would no longer be interested in the project.

Adelson already committed $650 million to the project.

“[The Raiders] want so much,” he said. “So I told my people, ‘Tell them I could live with the deal, I could live without the deal. Here’s the way it’s gonna go down: If they don’t want it, bye-bye.’”

Last month, the Nevada Legislature approved $750 million in public funding for the $1.9 billion domed stadium. Raiders owner Mark Davis made a commitment of $500 million, but some of that $500 million would come from the league itself.

NFL owners still need to vote to allow the team to relocate, but with the support of the likes of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the approval is likely.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has appeared neutral to the plan, but he did say last month that the NFL still opposes legalized sports betting. Nevada is the only state in the country with single-game wagering.

Assuming Adelson and the Raiders agree to terms and the NFL approves the move, the Raiders could be playing in Las Vegas in 2019.
