One of Pennsylvania’s largest casinos is planning a $90 million expansion thanks to New Jersey voters rejecting a plan to put casinos elsewhere in the Garden State.
Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem told The Morning Call that it’s eyeing more slot machines and table games. The project would give the casino the largest gaming floor among the dozen Keystone State casinos.
According to the report, half of the casino’s gamblers come from north Jersey, which was the location being considered for two Las Vegas-style casinos. Supporters of ending Atlantic City’s decades-long monopoly in New Jersey have said that the plan will be revisited at some point in the future, though not likely for at least a couple years.
Pending state regulatory approval, Sands Bethlehem could begin construction on the expansion as soon as January. It would need approval for exceeding a state cap set at 250 table games.
The casino had more than $500 million in gambling revenue in 2015. Statewide gaming win was a little more than $3 billion.
Sands’ planned expansion comes as lawmakers are considering a move to allow casinos to offer their games over the internet. The proposal was recently put on hold until 2017.
