Around 1,300 Chinese nationals were arrested and detained last week in Pampanga in the Philippines’ government crackdown on illegal online gambling and illegal immigration.
Reuters reported that the Philippines raided call center-like facilities at a former U.S. air base setup to run at least part of an online gambling business. The Chinese nationals are facing deportation, the Philippines Bureau of Immigration said. The workers allegedly overstayed their visas or violated the conditions of them.
The dententions reportedly caused a reaction from the Chinese government, which said that it “expresses concern over the large number of Chinese citizens detained by the Philippines.”
The incident has revived some friction between the two countries.
Online gambling is legal, but restricted, in the Philippines.
Through the first nine months of 2016, the regulated casino industry in the country reported revenue of $2 billion, up 20 percent year-over-year.
