Patrick Mahoney has won the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open $3,500 no-limit hold’em main event. A total of 760 entries were made in this tournament, easily surpassing the $2 million guarantee to build a $2,432,000 prize pool. As the winner Mahoney earned the first-place prize of $564,227 and the championship trophy.
The 32-year-old poker pro from Minnesota was also awarded 1,368 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his second final table finish of the year, and as a result he now sits in 154th place in the POY standings.
This was Mahoney’s third career live tournament title and by far his biggest career cash. He now has over $1 million in lifetime live earnings.
Mahoney came into the final day of this event in third chip position behind leader Matt Humphrey and WSOP bracelet winner Upeshka De Silva.
After three eliminations it was the three chip leaders to start the day that remained. De Silva hit the rail in third place when he ran top pair into the two-pair that became a rivered flush for Mahoney. De Silva earned $200,640 for his third place finish. His elimination set up the final heads-up battle between Humphrey and Mahoney.
Mahoney began with just move than a 2-to-1 chip advantage. The heads-up battle did not last long, and roughly half an hour after De Silva hit the rail it was all over.
In the final hand of the tournament Humphrey raised to 500,000 on the button with blinds of 100,000 – 200,000 and an ante of 25,000. Mahoney three-bet to 2 million. Humphrey elected to move all in for 8,725,000 and Mahoney snap called with the JJ. It was a classic race situation, with Humphrey holding the AK.
The board ran out Q96310 and Mahoney’s pocket jacks held up to earn him the pot and the title.
Humphrey was awarded $328,320 as the runner-up.
Ari Engel finished ninth in this event for $46,208. This was his 17th POY-qualified final table finish of 2016. The 114 points saw him secure his third-place spot on the POY leader board and narrow the gap between him and current second-place occupant David Peters. Engel has now cashed for $1,831,640 in live tournaments this year, including a win in the 2016 Aussie Millions main event.
