Earlier in 2016 PokerStars announced that it would rebrand it’s live poker tours, including the popular European Poker Tour, joining the largest events from several tours under the banner of PokerStars Championships starting in 2017. As a result that meant that the 2016 European Poker Tour Prague would be the final stop of the tour after a 13-season run. The final EPT main event ever drew 1,178 entries and in the end it was Dutchman Jasper Meijer van Putten who emerged victorious, topping a field of 1,192 entries to win the title and the top prize of €699,300 ($727,531 USD).
The 29-year-old Meijer van Putten outlasted a tough final table that included the likes of Samantha Cohen (6th – $151,790) and one of tournament pokers most impressive performers in recent years in David Peters (3rd – $413,339). Cohen had a chance to become only the third ever female player to win on the EPT but ultimately fell short, becoming the first player to hit the rail on the final day of play. Peters was at his 21st final table of the year, the most of any player in poker.
Peters has cashed for $7,077,023 so far in 2016, including winning his first World Series of Poker bracelet this summer. His third place finish in this event earned him his 15th cash for six figures or more. He was already in second place in the 2016 Card Player Player of the Year race, but this latest score was enough to see him surpass Fedor Holz to take the outright lead in the POY race. He earned 1,280 points in this event.
Marton Czuczor eliminated Peters to set up a heads-up battle with Meijer van Putten. The Hungarian went into the final showdown at a 2-to-5 chip disadvantage against Meijer van Putten. The two played for a while before deciding to strike a deal that redistributed the remaining prize pool, with Meijer van Putten locking up €649,300 and Czuczor securing€630,000. That left €50,000 and the title to play for.
Only twenty hands after striking the deal it was all over. With blinds of 150,000-300,000 Meijer van Putten raised to 700,000 from the button. Czuczor moved all in for 8,025,000 and Meijer van Putten made the call with the KJ. Czuczor held the 22 and it was off to the races. The flop brought the QJ3 to give Meijer van Putten the lead. The 5 on the turn left Czuczor drawing to just two outs. The 9 was not one of them and he was sent to the rail as the runner up, earning €630,000 ($655,433 USD.)
With that the 115th and final main event title in EPT was earned by Jasper Meijer van Putten.
