A dispute over a poker game at a hotel in India has reached a local high court, which is determining if poker is skill or gambling.
According to a report from The Times of India, local police in the city of Ahmedabad, which is in the Indian state Gujarat, have moved to crack down on the games at the Hotel Ramada. However, the hotel and poker supporters reportedly have argued to the court that poker isn’t banned under state law and thus needs no local government approval.
The view of poker as a game of skill has been gaining momentum in India in recent years, with several states having made moves to loosen laws pertaining to it.
According to another report, the petition for the games at the hotel is the second such case in the city. Local government is also considering allowing poker at a YMCA.
Poker supporters in Ahmedabad reportedly are using U.S. court cases that determined poker is a game of skill to help argue their case.
