Upswing Poker has teamed up with Card Player to bring you some exclusive poker strategy content. In this video Fee discusses the difficulties of playing from early position.
“The five players [left to act] are all three betting you with the top 4 to 6 percent of hands when you raise under the gun, whereas when you raise from the button the blinds are willing to three bet with much weaker hands,” says Fee in the video. “What that means you can’t raise these more marginal hands because you will have raised and be up against a three bet range that you can’t defend against.”
“The other reason [playing from early position is tough] is that you are out of position,” continued Fee. “You will also face calls from what will on average be stronger than the hands the would call with from the button or the blinds if you were in later position. On top of that, you will be out of position on later streets and there is intrinsic value lost because of that.”
