Ryan FeeUpswing Poker has teamed up with Card Player to bring you some exclusive poker strategy content. In this video Fee discusses no-limit hold’em and how it changes from a strategic perspective when played with an ante in addition to the blinds.

By and large non-ante is considered the standard structure when it comes to no-limit hold’em cash games, but games that include an ante are a bit more common online and can be found online and in live poker rooms as well, although usually at higher stakes.

In the video Fee discusses how the additional money in the middle at the start of the hand changes your approach.

“The reward for stealing [in an ante game] is bigger. In a normal game, If I raise the button and everyone folds I am going to win 1.5 big blinds. In an ante structure game… if I raise the button and win then I am going to win what is effectively 2.7 big blinds.”

As a result stealing becomes dramatically more profitable. It also means that you should be defending more hands against opponent’s steal attempts.

Check out the full video at the top of the story for more of Fee’s thoughts on the differences between playing with and without antes in no-limit hold’em.
