The L.A. Poker Classic is underway at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, and the 60-tournament series is off to a great start. The opening event, which featured an ambitious $100,000 guarantee with just a $175 buy-in, crushed expectations with a turnout of 1,079 players, creating a total prize pool of $161,850.
The action is expected to stay hot as the series moves into the heart of the schedule. The series began on Jan. 13 and will run all the way until March 1.
Highlights from the tournament lineup include the Commerce exclusive $175 all-in or fold bounty tournament, the $570 shot clock heads-up tournament and an $1,100 no-limit hold’em tournament with four starting days and a $1 million guarantee.
The tournaments have also had an effect on cash games, with Big O running around the clock and even a regular $12-$24 Big O and stud eight-or-better game forming.
This year, the Commerce will award two $10,000 seats into the WPT main event in special freerolls for the players. There is absolutely no obligation to the players, anyone 21 years or older can simply show up on Feb. 3 or 12 to try and win their seat.
There will also be a $30,000 added, Player of the Series freeroll that will award three additional seats as well as cash prizes. The top 100 points earners will compete, with more points being equal to more starting chips. Qualifying starts opening weekend.
Players can also earn their way into the main event with the regular satellites being offered or stay up-to-date on the Player of the Series with the upcoming L.A. Poker Cast, which features Matt Savage, Justin Hammer and D.J. Villegas.
