Tragedy struck Resorts World Manila on Friday morning.

Local police in the Philippines say that a lone gunman entered the property with a automatic rifle and stole 113 million pesos ($2.3 million) worth of chips and stuffed them inside a backpack. What could have been just a robbery turned out much worse.

At some point, the man dumped the contents of a water bottle onto at least one gaming table and set it on fire. Authorities had difficulty searching the casino as a result of the smoke. Police say that 37 people died in the fire, most likely from suffocation.

More than 20 were casino guests, and 13 were employees of the property, according to a report from CNN. About 70 people in total were injured.

Police say that most of the victims died inside a bathroom.

The gunman, who isn’t believed to be involved with a terror network, committed suicide in a hotel room before police could get to him. The casino recovered the gaming chips.

Police also say that he set himself on fire and his body isn’t yet identifiable.

The gunman is believed to have walked inside the casino via the parking garage with the automatic rifle at his side. Unarmed security inside the casino reportedly panicked.
