Shane Buchwald had never played in a World Series of Poker before sitting down in Monday’s $1,500 limit hold’em event in the 2017 summer series. He had also never won a gold bracelet, until he topped a field of 616 Wednesday night to claim the title and the $177,985 first-place prize.

Buchwald, an online player living in Brazil, didn’t even plan on playing in the event, and recently signed up for culinary school to leave poker behind.

“I registered this tournament after a 24-hour flight,” Buchwald told the WSOP after his win. “I came here with a friend who is a limit hold’em regular and he wanted to play this. By the end of four levels, I was falling asleep at the table. It’s the first WSOP event I’ve ever entered, and somehow, I built up a stack and ran really, really well.”

Buchwald topped a final table that included Ray Henson (3rd) and Nancy Nguyen (5th). Barry Greenstein (11th) recorded his sixth cash of the series. Other notables who made a deep run included Ian Johns (18th), Matt Grapenthien (20th), Sean Berrios (28th), Esther Taylor-Brady (43rd) and Alex Luneau (48th).

Here’s a look at the final table results.
