The $1,500 stud eight-or-better event final table at the 2017 World Series of Poker featured bracelet winners Ted Forrest (8th), Max Pescatori (6th) and Justin Bonomo (5th), but it was 68-year-old retiree making his first ever cash at the summer series who topped them all.
Ernest Bohn, from Whiting, New Jersey, outlasted a field of 595 entrants to pick up the bracelet and the $173,228 first-place money. Bohn came to Las Vegas with a plan that just so happened to work out.
“I made up my mind [to] play a lot of hi-lo tournaments, that I’m going to play cautious, I’m not going to chase, and I’ll play the best hands possible. It worked,” Bohn said.
Other notables who made a deep run included Don Zewin (10th), David Sklansky (13th), Tony Ma (17th), Joe Hachem (21st), John Cernuto (22nd), Chris Bjorin (24th), Ryan Hughes (27th), Mike Leah (33rd), Randy Ohel (38th), Allen Kessler (39th), and Jeff Madsen (40th).
In addition to the $37,441 he earned for his fifth-place showing, Bonomo also picked up 350 Card Player Player of the Year points, bringing his total to 3,631. The third-place resident is now just eight points behind Nick Petrangelo in second place and 531 points away from Bryn Kenney at the top.
