New Jersey continues to make moves to bolster its gambling industry.
On Thursday, lawmakers in the state Assembly approved a plan to allow horse racing tracks to offer their own internet casino gambling on-site. The activity would have to come through a partnership with an Atlantic City casino or an affiliate of a casino.
The legislation is intended boost revenues for both the casino and horse-racing industries.
What would it do exactly to existing law? The bill creates an exception for racetracks from the prohibition in existing law on so-called “Internet cafes.” The legislation now sits with the Senate for consideration. State lawmakers are also considering a bill to allow online betting equipment outside of Atlantic City if it’s "necessary to facilitate the conduct of international internet wagering.”
New Jersey is also working through the logistics of linking up online gambling player pools with Nevada and Delaware, as well as talking with the United Kingdom about a similar arrangement.
Furthermore, the state is trying to get the U.S. Supreme Court to allow it to have lucrative sports books at Atlantic City casinos.
Through the first nine months of this year, revenue for the Atlantic City casino-hotel industry was flat compared to the same period in 2016.
