Today, the countdown to the World Series of Poker's $50,000 World Championship H.O.R.S.E. event begins with the first of six mega-satellites that will be held to help feed the event.

The first $2,250 mega-satellite begins at 5 p.m. today. Satellites to get in the mega - and all the WSOP events - have been running around the clock since the WSOP started Saturday.

The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event is considered by many in the poker world as the event that determines the year's best poker player. Players need to play great in five different forms of poker: hold'em, Omaha high, razz, stud high, and stud eight-or-better.

Last year was the first year of the event, and the cream of the poker world definitely rose to the top. The event attracted 143 of the world's top pros, and the final table was loaded with them.

Chip Reese won the event, and its $1.7 million top prize. Andy Bloch came in second ($1.029 million), and the rest of the top 10 finished this way:

  • Phil Ivey, $617,760
  • James Bechtel, Sr., $549,120
  • T.J. Cloutier, $480,480
  • David Singer, $411,840
  • Dewey Tomko, $343,200
  • Doyle Brunson, $274,560
  • Patrik Antonius, $205,920
  • Robert Williamson III, $205,920

But it didn't stop there. The remainder of the top 15 finishers of last year's event were Gavin Smith, Barry Greenstein, Joe Cassidy, David Levi, and Ralph Perry,

The three other mega-satellites to this year's $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event take place June 12, 13, 16, 18, and 22. All start at 5 p.m. PT.
