The 2018 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em ‘single day’ high roller event took only 13 hours to complete, from start to finish. It was an action-packed baker’s dozen, and in the end it was Jason Koon who emerged victorious with the title and the first-place prize of $421,080.
Koon might have felt that he had some kind of home-field advantage in this event, seeing as he won the $100,000 buy-in super high roller a year and a few days earlier.
The 32-year-old poker pro from Weston, West Virginia came into the final table of the event as the second shortest stack before going on an elimination spree, seeing him send Chris Kruk (7th – $71,580), Chris Hunichen (6th – $89,840) and Benjamin Pollak (5th – $115,100) to the rail in relatively quick succession. Mikalai Vaskaboinikau handled the next two knockouts, sending Nick Petrangelo (4th – $148,780) and Tim Adams (3rd – $196,500) to the rail to take the lead going into heads-up play.
Koon flopped a full house on a 544 board holding pocket fives and won a sizable pot that saw him overtake the lead. From there he never looked back. In the final hand Vaskaboinikau moved all-in from the button only to have Koon snap-call with the AA. Vaskaboinikau could only produce the K6. The board ran out Q85J3 and Koon’s aces held up to secure him the pot and the title. Vaskaboinikau earned $304,580 as the runner-up finisher.
