The gears are turning for Greece to allow casino construction at a former airport near Athens, its capital city.

According to a report from Kathimerini, government officials are looking to make the business “environment for major players more attractive” (translation). The report stated that the Greek Finance Ministry is preparing to hire a consultant to draw up the casino licensing language. The hiring will happen sometime this month, per the report. Casino firms are expected to vie for the license this summer before one is awarded in the fall.

Right now, Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment is the only company that has “shown interest” in a casino at the former airport. The firm reportedly has approached the Greek government about a project. Government officials are eyeing as much as $8 billion worth of investment in a casino-resort complex at the former Ellinikon International Airport.

The Greek gambling industry, which historically has been heavily controlled by the state, has recovered in recent years. People there spent €5.9 billion on gambling as recently as a few years ago, according to a report from Newsweek. Greece currently has nine casinos.
