The 190 sports books in the state of Nevada won a combined $25 million in January, per the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which released the numbers Wednesday.
Football accounted for $7.8 million of the $25 million, while basketball brought in $15 million.
The winnings were up a whopping 215 percent compared to January 2017, according to the revenue report. The casinos retained six percent of the wagers, which means that more than $418 million was bet on sports during the month.
While winnings were up, the handle was down more than eight percent year-over-year compared to the $455 million bet by sports gamblers in January 2017.
Over the 12 months prior to Feb. 1, 2018, the books won $265.9 million, up 28 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Nevada’s sports books won a record $248.7 million from gamblers last year. The figure smashed the previous record of $231.7 million set in 2015. The revenue was 13.5 percent more than what was generated in 2016 and reflected a win percentage of 5.1 percent. Bettors wagered a record $4.8 billion last year.
