Canada’s gambling market posted a strong performance in 2017.

According to Fantini Gaming Research, gambling revenues for the country grew five percent last year to C$17.3 billion ($13.5 billion USD). The gambling spend includes winnings from brick-and-mortar casinos, the lottery, internet gambling and charitable gaming. Toronto accounted for a whopping 43 percent of Canada’s gambling revenue last year.

The data was first reported by CDC Gaming Reports.

How does the $13.5 billion compare to gaming revenues in Canada’s neighbor to the south? In America, the commercial casino industry, which includes Las Vegas, wins north of $40 billion annually. Tribal casinos, which dominate the gambling markets in states like California and Florida, win about $30 billion each year. State lotteries in America generate more than $80 billion per year.

In other words, America’s gambling market dwarfs Canada’s.
