Sam Greenwood is having an incredible run on the live tournament circuit. He has four seven-figure live tournament scores in his career, and three of them have come in the last six months. The most recent huge payday for the Canadian poker pro came in the 2018 European Poker Tour Monte Carlo €100,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em super high roller. Greenwood topped a field of 46 total entries in the event to win €1,520,000 ($1,839,200 USD). Greenwood now has more than $11.3 million in lifetime live tournament earnings, enough to move him into fifth place on the Canadian all-time money list.
In addition to the money and the title, Greenwood also earned 600 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his third POY-qualified title and his seventh final table finish of 2018. With 2,281 points and $4,015,094 in year-to-date earnings, Greenwood has climbed into tenth place on the overall POY leaderboard.
Greenwood was not the only player to make a move near the top of the rankings as a result of this event. Isaac Haxton placed sixth for $378,730 USD and 200 points at his tenth final table, shooting into the 11th-place spot. Justin Bonomo finished fifth for $485,210 USD and 250 points. This was his eighth final table of the year, and he secured his hold on the third-place spot in the standings with this latest deep run.
Greenwood eliminated Ole Schemion in fourth place ($620,730 USD) to take the lead. Christoph Vogelsang closed the gap when he took a huge chunk out of Ali Reza Fatehi. Vogelsang flopped a straight flush draw, holding the 107 on a 876 flop. He was up against Fatehi’s 109, which had flopped a straight, but Vogelsang hit his gin card on the turn when the 9 peeled off the deck to give him the straight flush. Fatehi moved all-in after the turn and was quickly called, only to find that he was drawing dead. Fatehi was left with less than two big blinds and was eliminated shortly afterward.
Greenwood entered heads-up play against Vogelsang with just shy of a 2-to-1 lead. The two battled it out for more than two hours, with plenty of swings along the way. By the time the final hand arose Vogelsang’s stack slipped to around 15 blinds. He shoved from the buttong with the A5 and Greenwood called with the KJ. The board ran out J8310J and Greenwood made trip jacks to secure the pot and the title. Vogelsang earned $1,265,660 USD as the runner-up, the third largest score of his career. He now has more than $16.8 million in lifetime live tournament earnings.
