Commercial and tribal casinos won a record sum from gamblers last year, according to a report from the American Gaming Association released Wednesday.

In its annual “State of the States” report, the AGA said that commercial casinos won $40.28 billion from gamblers, an all-time high. The $40.28 billion was a 3.4 percent increase year-over-year.

According to the National Indian Gaming Commission, tribal gaming revenues hit a record $32.4 billion in 2017, up 3.9 percent from 2016, the AGA said in its report.

Combined, the nearly 1,000 casinos and 300 card rooms nationwide won $72.6 billion. There were also nearly 18,000 “electronic gaming device locations,” the AGA said.

“Each year, AGA’s State of the States report provides the most detailed snapshot available of our complex industry, and the many benefits AGA members provide for their employees, partners and communities,” said interim AGA CEO Stacy Papadopoulos. “This year’s report demonstrates the commercial gaming industry’s role as a job creator and revenue generator in states across the country, and we’re proud of the industry’s steady growth over the past few years.”

According to the AGA, all but four commercial casino states had gaming revenue growth last year. Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico and West Virginia all experienced declines.

The casino industry got a major shot in the arm back in May when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to allow sports betting nationwide. That market could reach $6 billion within the next five years.
