Even without sports betting, Maryland casinos had an excellent showing in September.
Per figures from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming agency, the state’s six casinos won $143.7 million off gamblers last month, an increase of seven percent compared to the $134.5 million won in September 2017.
The casinos paid $59.5 million in taxes on that gaming win, the state said.
The $143.7 million was Maryland’s fourth-best month ever for gaming revenue. Four of the six casinos saw year-over-year increases compared to their September 2017 gaming revenue totals.
MGM National Harbor led the way with $54.4 million (10 percent year-over-year gain) of the collective winnings, followed closely by Live! Casino & Hotel with $50.2 million (seven percent year-over-year gain). Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, which was third, saw its gaming revenue of $20.6 million fall 1.6 percent compared to September 2017.
Slot machines accounted for $93.6 million of the $143.7 million won last month, while house-banked table games brought in $46.3 million. The poker tables generated $3.8 million. Slot winnings were $86.2 million in September 2017, while the tables brought in $44.6 million and poker generated $3.6 million. Four of the six casinos have poker.
Maryland’s gaming market continues to grow, making it the hottest of its kind in the country. According to the American Gaming Association, Maryland’s casino gambling market grew 34 percent last year to $1.6 billion. That growth far outpaced nationwide gaming revenue growth of about 3.4 percent in 2017.
The Old Line State could eventually join the growing list of states with legalized and regulated sports books. The Maryland Legislature flirted with sports betting this year in the form of a draft piece of legislation, but the measure didn’t advance. There are no signs that lawmakers won’t consider legislation again in 2019.
