Unikrn, an esports company backed by some high profile investors such as Mark Cuban and Ashton Kutcher, has received approval from the Isle of Man to begin rolling out their cryptocurrency-based betting service.
The betting license will allow the company to expand their offerings beyond their current 20 countries, bringing esports wagering to Europe, South Korea, parts of Latin America, and eventually certain states in the U.S.
“This is long in the making," said Unikrn COO Andrew Vouris. "You can bet in fiat, crypto, or both, to bet on live markets or pre match for twenty titles and dozens of games a day on titles such as League of Legends, Dota and Fortnite.”
Unikrn, which was established in 2014, is reportedly the first betting company built entirely on blockchain technology and can handle more than 9,000 bets per second. Users can place bets on esports events, teams, and individual players using the platforms own native cryptocurrency, UnikoinGold (UKG).
Esports has surged in popularity in the last decade. Originally drawing professional video gamers, it is estimated that by 2019, more than 427 million people worldwide will be watching some form of the product.
Popular games in the genre include real-time strategy (RTS), first-person shooter (FPS), fighting and multi-player online battle arena (MOBA) titles such as Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Hearthstone, Overwatch, StarCraft, League of Legends, Fortnite, and Dota 2, among many others.
The Luxor in Las Vegas is currently home to a 30,000-square foot, multi-level esports arena that features a 50-foot LED wall, telescopic seating, and a full network TV-quality production studio for broadcasting.
