Betting Site Lists Beto O'Rourke As Favorite To Challenge Trump In 2020Site Allows Gamblers To Wager On U.S. Political Futures |

He may have narrowly lost in his election bid for the Senate last week, but Beto O’Rourke remains a favorite among candidates for the Democratic nomination for President, according to at least one off-shore betting site.
Online betting site BetDSI currently lists the Texas-native at +500 for the democratic nomination, meaning a $100 bet would see a return of $500 if he won. Earlier this year, O’Rourke was going for as high as 50:1. Kamala Harris comes in as the second favorite at +550, while Elizabeth Warren rounds out the top three at +800. Other candidates include Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Kloubchar and Cory Booker.
O’Rourke managed to almost flip a deeply red state to blue with his Senate campaign, and along the way gained national attention with celebrity endorsements from stars such as Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Ellen Degeneres, Jim Carrey, Gregg Popovich, and Lebron James.
Despite being the current favorite for the nomination, BetDSI, also known as Diamond Sports International, still lists O’Rourke at +1000 to win the actual presidency. Donald Trump, as the incumbent, is listed at +150, with Harris at +800 and Warren at +1000.
A century ago, betting on political races was as common as betting on the Super Bowl is today. Now it’s illegal. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is allowed to run prediction markets, but those bets are capped at $850.
Gamblers still place bets abroad, however, on everything from sports to entertainment. Prop bets have become especially popular, allowing users to bet on things such as the duration of the National Anthem at major sporting events, who will win at the Oscars, and even where Amazon was going to put it’s second headquarters (they were wrong about that one).
Irish online bookmaker Paddy Power has also taken political wagers in the past, including prop bets relating to Trump’s presidency. Gamblers can bet on whether or not he will get to finish his first term, build a wall between Mexico and the U.S., and if the Queen of England will ban him from the United Kingdom.
