PokerStars is inching its way back into the U.S. online poker market after the company’s license was approved for online gambling Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The Stars Group was one of two applicants to receive authorization, the other being Mohegan Sun Pocono for their online slots and table games product.
PokerStars has partnered with land-based Mount Airy Casino in a deal announced last August. Although neither entity has yet applied for a sports betting license, The Stars Group plans to eventually also incorporate the BetStars platform in the state.
This is now the second state that PokerStars has re-entered following the events of Black Friday in April of 2011. PokerStars has also been operating in New Jersey since 2016.
The company recently announced a deal with land-based casino company Eldorado resorts, which operates 28 casinos in 12 states.
Mohegan Sun also had an opportunity to apply for an online poker license, but ultimately decided to ditch the poker plans. Of Pennsylvania’s 13 casinos, seven are now approved for online poker. Only two casinos have yet to apply for any online gaming licenses.
Pennsylvania remains the second-largest gaming market in the U.S. The state’s then-12 land-based casinos brought in a total of $3.23 billion in gross gaming revenue in 2017.
