Steven Spunt has won the 2018 World Series of Poker Circuit Bicycle Hotel & Casino $1,700 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event. The 58-year-old entrepreneur from Trabuco Canyon, CA was awarded his second WSOPC gold ring, the $174,055 top prize, and 840 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event.
Spunt has had quite the run in December, making two final tables at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic series to start the month off with two fifth-place finishes.
“I started working on my game a little bit,” Spunt told WSOP reporters after coming out on top. “I study a little bit. Not a lot because I don’t have time because I’m still working. I play for fun. I really enjoy the game. Part of my retirement plan is to play more just because I like it. It’s something to do. Hopefully, I’ll semi-retire and play a lot more tournaments.”
Spunt entered the final day of this event in 11th chip position with 13 players remaining. Spunt doubled up right off the bat and then scored back-to-back eliminations, busting Alexander Furahi (12th – $12,995) and Viet Vo (11th – $12,995) to take the chip lead into the unofficial ten-handed final table.
Spunt didn’t score his next knockout until the tournament was down to four-handed action. Spunt’s 87 won a preflop race against the pocket fours of short-stacked Jason Bral to send him to the rail in fourth place ($58,405). David Lambard spiked an ace with his A10 against the pocket tens of Steven Forman, eliminating him in third place ($78,710) to take the chip lead into heads-up play with Spunt.
The two battled it out for a while, but the key hand of the match arose when the two saw a flop of J88 in a single-raised pot. Spunt checked to Lombard, who bet 800,000. Spunt check-raised all-in for 6,430,000. Lombard made the call with the J3 for top pair. Spunt had 108 for second pair and a straight draw. The 9 on the turn gave Spunt the straight and the lead. The 3 on the river secured the pot for Spunt, who took nearly a 6-to-1 lead after the hand.
In the final hand Lambard moved all-in from the button with the KK. Spunt called with the A9. The board ran out 976J10 and Spunt made the nut flush to secure the hand and the title. Lambard took home $107,640 as the runner-up finisher.
