The $5,000,000 guaranteed partypoker MILLIONS South America $10,300 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event drew a total of 439 entries to the Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After six full days of action, that field was narrowed down to just one player: Martin Mathis. The American poker pro earned $894,844 USD for the win, by far the largest live tournament score of his career.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for twelve years,” Mathis told partypoker LIVE reporters after coming out on top. “It means the world to me.”

Mathis was also awarded 1,800 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event, enough to surge into 17th place in the overall POY standings.

Mathis came into the final day as the second shortest stack with 29.9 million in chips, while Brazilian local Bruno Volkmann held more than 146 million as the leader among the remaining six players.

Mathis was able to outlast the outright short stack Carlos De Lima (6th – $256,050 USD) before finding his first double up of the day. Mathis picked up pocket jacks against the pocket tens of WPT champion and recent L.A. Poker Classic main event runner-up Matas Cimbolas. He held up from there to climb his way into the middle of the pack.

The second knockout of the day went to Mathis. He called the all-in of Vlada Stojanovic with AHeart SuitKHeart Suit and made a flush on the turn to best the Serbian’s pocket tens. Stojanovic earned $307,260 USD as the fifth-place finisher.

Canadian Samuel Gagnon was the next to hit the rail, falling to the turned set of fours of Bruno Volkmann. Gagnon earned a $378,954 USD payout for his fourth-place showing.

During three-handed play, the remaining competitors came to a chop agreement that redistributed the prize pool a bit. Matas Cimbolas locked up $571,504 USD as the short stack, Mathis secured $681,048 USD and Bruno Volkman guaranteed himself $703,625 USD as the chip leader. The title and $218,199 USD were set aside for the eventual champion.

Matas Cimbolas was eliminated in third place ($571,504 USD) not long after the deal was decided. Mathis flopped trips and ended up with a boat by the river to end the Lithuanian’s latest run.

With that Mathis took roughly 240 million into heads-up play against Bruno Volkmann’s 199 million. Volkman flopped a flush on an all-club flop that also gave Mathis the nut flush draw and got all-in. He held up to double into the lead. Mathis was able to regain the ascendancy quickly, though, and was able to extend his lead to more than a 20-to-1 advantage by the time the final hand arose.

Volkman got his last chips in with QDiamond Suit2Spade Suit and Mathis called holding QClub Suit8Club Suit. The board ran out ADiamond SuitJHeart Suit3Diamond Suit7Diamond Suit10Spade Suit and Mathis’ kicker played to earn him the pot and the title. Volkman took home the $703,625 USD he had secured in the deal for his runner-up finish.
