CardPlayer caught up with Tom Schneider during day 1 of event #54, the last open event prior to the $10,000 championshipmMain event.

Card Player: If we don't ask you this question, someone is going to seriously question our player selection. How has the Series gone for you?

Tom Schneider: Ah well, it's gone pretty well, I gotta say. It's worked out well. I have been pretty fortunate. But I can't seem to cash outside of making a final table.

[At this point Tom had three final table appearances at the 2007 WSOP and two bracelets.]

CP: So, have you played as much as you planned to?

TS: I wanted to play a lot of events because I told my wife I wanted to take a run at the Player of the Year [best all-around award]. I've really only played five to 10 events in the past. Since I jumped off to a good start, I figured why not go ahead and keep going to try to get some points for Player of the Year. Jeffery Lisandro could catch me, if he makes a final table and he is in this tournament [event #54]. Also Scotty Nguyen, Scott Clements, and Phil Hellmuth still have shots.

[Tom did indeed win the first WSOP Player of the Year award, when both Tom (16th) and Jeffery Lisandro (14th) made the final two tables of event #54.]

CP: What has gone well this year at the Series and what needs some attention?

TS: I like the fact that they tried a lot of new things. I like when people innovate. I feel like they are trying to make things better and better each year. They could increase the temperature; that would be nice. But all in all, I think it has been a great World Series and not just because I have won a couple of times. I appreciate that they are innovating and trying to improve each year. Some things work, some don't but that's the way it goes.
