Two men robbed a Macau casino last week with pepper spray and made out with HK$3 million ($382,000) in chips.
According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the two men entered the Four Seasons Hotel at about 5:30 a.m. They used pepper spray to attack a dealer and a security guard at a baccarat table before fleeing the casino with the chips.
The police were called and arrested four suspects connected to the crime the following day. Local media outlets are reporting that all four arrested were between the ages of 20-40 and from mainland China.
The two men who attacked the dealer and security guard were arrested in Zhuhai. They fled to the mainland while the other two suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested in Macau before they were supposed to change the chips for cash.
Earlier in the month, a report was released from local law enforcement that casino-related crime was up 14 percent in 2019.
The most recent heist in Macau was one of the larger robberies this year. In January, a dealer at Wynn Macau stole HK$4.8 million in chips from a VIP area and fled the scene on his motorcycle. He was arrested two days later, along with a male family member.
In response to the increased crimes, the Macau Daily Times is reporting that lawmakers are pushing for facial recognition software to be a requirement for casinos to receive a gaming license.
