Repeat Is Not to Be

We caught up with 2007 World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold at the dinner break of the no-limit hold'em with rebuys event (#52).

Card Player: World Series 2007, how is it going for you to this point?

Jamie Gold: Things are going pretty well now. I cashed in my last event. I was the big chip leader today up until about a minute ago when a guy hit a one-outer on me. But I must still be in the top five: I have almost 100,000.

[Goldwas, in fact, still the chip leader after losing that pot.]

JG: I think the average is around 20,000, so I am doing pretty well today. I'm feeling good but it's all just a warm-up for the big one.

CP: Have you played about as much as you planned to?

JG: Yeah, I think so. I have played in five maybe six. I bubbled in three, cashed in one and I am one of the leaders in this one.

CP: Something you want changed for next year's Series?

JG: The sequestered final tables. That seems like a pretty odd choice. I mean, that's part of the excitement ,for people to come down and watch the final tables. Especially to watch friends and family; the final tables need to have a lot more stadium seating if possible.

CP: And the good things?

JG: I actually think Harrah's is doing the best they can under the circumstances. They have been extremely kind to me. I haven't found anything they are doing wrong. It does seem like a big percentage of the money is taken out from the tournaments. It's not like it greatly affects me, but for people playing on the margin, it makes it very tough to come out ahead playing tournament poker when 10 percent of your money is taken away.

[Gold made day 2 of event #52 but fell short of the money and then, on day 1D of the main event, he began the defense of his ,title but again there will be no repeat champion this year.]
