Justin Bonomo Wins Triton Poker London £100,000 Short Deck Main Event

Justin Bonomo has emerged victorious from a field of 108 entries to win the 2019 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London £100,000 ($125,900 USD) buy-in short deck event. For the win the American poker pro earned $3,257,400 USD. Incredibly, this was only the fourth-largest cash of his career.

Bonomo had held the lead on poker’s all-time money list for just over a year, having moved into the top spot by winning the 2018 World Series of Poker Big One For One Drop $1,000,0000 buy-in for $10 million last July. He was recently surpassed in the rankings by Bryn Kenney who struck a deal heads-up in the £1,050,000 Triton Million event that wrapped up on August 4, earning more than $20.6 million in the process. Bonomo took less than a week to respond to Kenney’s move into the top spot. He secured his seventh career cash for seven figures or more and increased his career earnings to more than $48.5 million. This was his seventh tournament cash for a million dollars or more. Despite this huge win, Bonomo still sits more than $7.2 million behind Kenney on the earnings leaderboard.

In addition to securing the massive top prize, Bonomo also earned 1,200 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his third title and fifth final table of the year. As a result, he has moved into 38th place in the 2019 POY race, which is sponsored by Global Poker.

Bonomo came into the final day of this event in second chip position behind Wai Kin Yong, who was fresh off of winning the £100,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event at this series for more than $3.1 million.

The first knockout of the day went to Bonomo when his AK outran the 98 of Ming Zhong Liu (7th – $588,284 USD). Bonomo had nearly drawn even with Yong, but he soon opened up the lead again by scoring a double knockout.

Rui Cao shoved from under the gun with J10. Wai Kin Yong moved all-in as well holding the KK. Isaac Haxton looked down at the AA and made the call to put himself at risk against Yong, while having Cao covered. The board came down KQ6106 and Yong made kings full to scoop the massive pot, eliminating Cao (6th – $746,518 USD) and Haxton (5th – $955,260 USD) to chip up to over 15 million.

Paul Phua was the runner-up finisher in the no-limit hold’em main event, earning over $3.1 million after striking a deal with Yong heads-up. Phua made it down to four-handed play in this event before his run came to an end. He got all-in with KQ and found himself up against the AQ of Yong, who flopped a straight and improved to a flush by the river. Phua earned $1,188,890 and 600 POY points for his latest deep run, climbing into fourth place in the 2019 POY standings with 10 final table finishes and more than $10.7 million in year-to-date earnings.

Liang Xu was the next player to go when his KQ lost a preflop showdown against the 109 of Bonomo, who made a full house by the river to send Zu to the rail with $1,467,050 USD as the third-place finisher.

Bonomo and Yong began heads-up play relatively close in chips. Yong got out to an early lead, and extended it to nearly a 3-to-1 advantage at one point. Bonomo was able to close the gap somewhat before finding a key double up to turn the tables. Bonomo got all-in on a flop of 1096 with the QJ. Yong called with 98[[suit:club]. Bonomo picked up extra outs with the A on the turn. The J on the end gave him a pair of jacks, which were enough to see him take a 3-to-1 lead of his own.

In the final hand Bonomo shoved from the button with KJ and Yong called holding the A8. The board ran out Q8710J and Bonomo rivered a pair of jacks to lock up the pot and the title. Yong earned $2,238,700 USD as the runner-up finisher.
