On September 1, legal sports betting launched in Indiana. About a month later, Indiana residents will be able to bet from the comfort of their own home.
State gaming officials in Indiana announced Wednesday that mobile and online sports betting would be launched October 3. According to the Indianapolis Star, the state’s gaming commission said that Rush Street Gaming has “substantially demonstrated” that its operation meets Indiana’s regulatory requirements for its mobile sports betting product.
Rush Street, a Chicago-based company that has partnerships with Rivers Casino locations in New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois, will partner with French Lick Casino to become the first provider of online betting in the Hoosier State.
When the state made sports betting legal earlier this year, the commission decided to roll it out in two phases. The first phase was to roll out retail, brick-and-mortar sports betting locations and then focus on a mobile rollout after the in-person betting options were complete.
French Lick Casino will be the first online operator in the state, but others will follow.
As more states legalize sports betting, it’s become clear that the mobile and online aspect of the market is key to its health.
In New Jersey, the nation’s second-largest sports betting market, about 80 percent of the bets are placed online. Rhode Island fell well short of its tax revenue when it was a retail-only market. The numbers improved after the Ocean State passed another piece of legislation that allowed mobile betting.
The numbers from betting online were so eye-opening that Tennessee opted for a mobile-only model. During the first two weeks of sports betting in neighboring Iowa, 43 percent of the total sports betting handle was made up of online betting.
