A North Carolina cancer patient won a six-figure sum off a scratch-off lottery ticket en route to his final round of chemotherapy treatment.
Ronnie Forster, a native of the Tar Heel state, is battling colon cancer, and decided to purchase a lottery ticket at a gas station on his way to the hospital, according to a statement from the North Carolina Lottery. He won $5 on the first ticket, so he bought two more.
The first ticket left Foster empty handed, but the second scored him a $200,000 prize. After taxes, Foster netted $141,501.
“I was already happy because it was my last round of chemo,” Foster told the lottery. “Winning this made it my lucky day.”
The retired Department of Transportation employee plans to use the money to pay off his medical bills, and save the rest of it for a rainy day.
“I have good insurance,” said the Pink Hill resident. “But there is still some cost. This will make it a whole lot easier.”
According to the North Carolina Lottery, ticket sales raised more than $700 million last year to fund the state’s public school system.
